Ganesh Chaturthi Unveiled: Paving way for a memorable celebration

The Backstory:

Every epic legend starts with an intriguing and remarkable tale.

The story of Ganesha begins with Goddess Parvati, who shaped him from clay. After bringing him to life, she appointed him as the guardian of her chamber while she bathed. One day, Lord Shiva sought to enter that room, but Ganesha stood firm and barred his entry. This infuriated Lord Shiva, who, in a fit of rage, severed Ganesha’s head. Realising his grave error, Lord Shiva then replaced Ganesha’s head with that of an elephant, granting him the distinctive feature that would forever identify him.

To rectify his mistake, Lord Shiva proclaimed that Ganesha would be honoured before any other deity, called upon at the start of every new venture. This declaration marked the inception of Ganesh Chaturthi, a festival celebrating the birth of this cherished God. It is believed that invoking Ganesha before embarking on any task will remove obstacles and ensure success.

Inspirational Qualities of Lord Ganesha:

Lord Ganesha embodies numerous admirable qualities that we should strive to incorporate into our lives. The foremost of these is profound wisdom. While he is often associated with granting material prosperity, he also symbolises deep understanding, essential for navigating life’s complexities. With wisdom, we can make informed choices and avoid the pitfalls of ignorance. Another significant trait of Lord Ganesha is his unwavering generosity towards all who seek his blessings. He represents the essence of selflessness, generously bestowing his grace without bias.

Our Connection with Ganesh Chaturthi:

Looking back at the history of The Bombay Store, we can see that our founding member Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak was a prominent figure who advocated the public celebration of the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi by bringing forth the concept of putting together the Saarvajanik Ganpati. Initially this ten-day festival used to be celebrated within individual homes, but Tilak wanted to get the community together and build strength and resilience within them that would in turn further ignite the race to freedom. It is because of him that we witness grand pandals, lively processions, and collective prayers in public. Such shared celebrations truly foster a sense of unity and cultural pride.

Ganpati at Home:

Welcoming a Ganesha idol into your home is truly a momentous event. This personal aspect of the festival allows for intimate moments of reflection, family bonding, and the creation of cherished memories. It's an opportunity to instill cultural values in younger generations and to find moments of peace amidst the festive fervour. The entire house is thoroughly cleaned and adorned with lovely decorations. You can find a variety of Ganesh idols, from serene sitting figures to vibrant standing ones, and even some that are joyfully dancing! The aarti, a beautiful musical invocation, is performed three times daily. Family, friends, and relatives come together around the idol, engaging in heartfelt prayers. In these moments, Lord Ganesha becomes an integral part of the household and the family. Any festival is incomplete without the grand spread of scrumptious food – and Ganesh Chaturthi is not an exception. The iconic sweet dumplings are a favourite of Lord Ganesha and are delightfully devoured by both children and adults. The immersion of the idol at the end of the ten days concludes the festival. It is symbolic of the dissolution of all our obstacles, paving way for a fresh start.
